TGS visits the Oxfordshire Shooting School
Posted by Sam Chipper on 10 October 2021
Under the perfect Oxfordshire sunshine and blue skies, Jonny, the host of TGS, and his partner in crime, Ant, visited OSS to see what all the fuss was about. Their mission was simple: have a great day out while putting their skills to the test and seeing what they were made of.
A relaxed and friendly shooting ground, described as "Small. Very Mighty," OSS lives up to its reputation. Despite its modest 5-acre size (with expansion plans in the works), the facility boasts over 15 stands and 2 compact sportings, packing a significant punch. Our director, Matt, spoke to Jonny and Ant about all things OSS. While the initial aim was to set up a "shooting school," OSS has grown into much more. It's a place for shooters of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned competitors, to think, learn, and challenge themselves.
CPSA-registered shoots are held almost every month at OSS, offering an excellent opportunity for shooters with a full CPSA membership to test their abilities against participants from across the country. It's a great way to dive deeper into the shooting community and socialise with new faces.
Shooters are tested with 100 targets over four different disciplines. It's an effective way to identify strengths and weaknesses and build upon them to become an overall better shot. Check Our Calendar to join in on the action and see how you measure up.
Exploring the entirety of our ground. Their visit tested their abilities on a variety of challenging targets, including high crossers, incoming midis, and loopers. The grand finale featured both compact sportings, where the real competition began.
Our director, Matt, set up a unique competition on the compact sportings to truly test their mettle. The challenge: Shoot the singles on each stand and then shoot both pairs simultaneously. This added a layer of complexity and fun, pushing both Jonny and Ant to their limits.
Despite the friendly rivalry, the competition was tight. Ant emerged as the winner, but not without a few retries (which we’ll graciously forget about). Both shooters missed a couple of targets here and there, highlighting the difficulty of the challenge.
Their day at OSS wasn’t just about competition; it was about experiencing the camaraderie and the thrill of the sport. Jonny and Ant were full of praise for OSS, calling it "epic" and "the best small ground we’ve been to." They highlighted the realistic nature of our targets, perfect for training: "These targets are what you're going to see in the field. If you're in the area, come here."
We are immensely grateful to Jonny, Ant, and the rest of TGS Outdoors for visiting OSS and featuring us on the Clay Tour 2021 list. Their visit has put a spotlight on what we offer, and we couldn't be more thrilled.
